SmartOX: A first-of-its-kind smartphone-powered pulse-oximetry device.

SmartOX is a feasible and intuitive form of low-cost vital monitoring to be distributed to LDCs and vulnerable patients in medical deserts.

Home medicine has never looked so good.

SmartOX is the future of at-home health monitoring. Designed to be intuitive and affordable, SmartOX embraces Earth's interconnectedness and relies on smartphones to accurately measure blood-oxygen saturation levels (down to 70%), in addition to heart rate.
A series of features set SmartOX apart from its competition:
  • USB-C connectivity reduces the need for a large LiPo battery and integrates seamlessly with most smartphones
  • Minimal technical features help extend SmartOX’s lifespan, with the four LEDs being the sole active technical components
  • Its construction of post-consumer PP helps ensure sustainability as a forethought throughout every stage of development and production
  • Its flexible construction encourages near-total compatibility with all modern smartphone designs
  • The SmartOX app grants the user full control over their recorded data, with plans for a future doctor-patient portal
  • Oxygen is essential to life, and our bodies need a certain amount of oxygen to function properly. Blood oxygen saturation, or SPO2, is the amount of oxygen a person has circulating in their blood. Once in the bloodstream, oxygen travels to cells all over the body, helping them to create energy efficiently, which the body uses to sustain itself.

  • The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of vital-monitoring. As patients were entering the ER with blood-oxygen levels typically considered lethal, it became clear that there was a need for a better way to watch for early warning signs.

  • SmartOX utilizes a relatively simplistic algorithm developed by the University of Washington to attain pulse through your smartphone camera’s perceived movement (through changes in colour as blood pumps through the veins), while it measures oxygen saturation primarily on colour alone. It relies on the further expansion of sample size in the studies referenced to help improve the algorithm’s accuracy.

  • Immunocompromised people with a need to measure vitals easily at home, in addition to those with chronic respiratory issues (especially those residing in LDCs) are some of the initially targeted markets. However, SmartOX can help everyone who wants to make sure they’re staying safe and healthy.

“Among the many surprises of the new coronavirus is one that seems to defy basic biology: infected patients with extraordinarily low blood-oxygen levels, or hypoxia, scrolling on their phones, chatting with doctors, and generally describing themselves as comfortable. Clinicians call them happy hypoxics.”
